Altheide, fear ruling over the language
25/09/2008
Altheide, fear ruling over the language David Altheide, sociologist, talked about the rhetoric of fear and the politics of fear. He explained the fear-building process analyzing some videos concerning the words "terrorism", "9/11" and "Saddam Hussein". Mauro Mazza, Director of TG2, introduced the debate "Fear and the role of media" saying that "Media shouldn't minimize fears; they should try to win the accuse stating that media amplify fears". According to David Altheide, sociologist, fear may change the language and may reflect new visions of the world connected to it. Altheide stated that if you continuously associate the concept of fear to a relevant theme (ex. criminality, drug), afterwhile, even if the word "fear" is no more connected to the theme, the concept won't disappear from the perception of that particular theme. Altheide ended his speech stating that the war on Iraq has been possible in the way it actually is, only because of a long preparation.
