Summary of the speech

We need to place fear in the context of the current financial crisis and the contemporary western socio-economic development model. This crisis is intertwined with fear, because social sentiments profoundly influence economic dynamics.

We are therefore witnessing the crisis of the economy of euphoria, economy of optimism, economy of growth. It is being substituted by the economy of fear, fear that is the result of a specific historic choice, allegiance to a market based growth model, based naturally on freedom but also on uncertainty and risk.

What are the answers to this growing fear? The first rational response is to reorganize nation-states, with the objective of providing responses to the naturally market generated risks, combined with the supernationalisation of insurance companies.

The second answer is to make a show of it, show as in entertainment, distraction, recreational activity, which feeds the economy of optimism, but which also means amplifying fear through the media spectacularisation of fear.
