Reviving tradition to combat anxiety
Summary of the speech A paradox of economic modernisation is that it often leads to rediscovering traditions. While countries like China, Russia, and India grow rich and their economies open up to the outside, the population closes up within themselves. Why does this happen? An important reason is that traditional lifestyles can help to fight the anxiety that often accompanies modernisation. While the competition for the conquest of social status and wealth is becoming increasingly fierce, people are becoming increasingly individualistic and are returning to traditional philosophies to promote social responsibility and restore a sense of belonging. In my presentation, I will speak about China and will show how Confucianism has returned on the scene to fight modern fears. Just like other traditional philosophies, Confucianism can take on good or bad forms, and I will focus on a progressionist interpretation, which could be promising for future social and political reforms.
