Haim Baharier (Mathematic and psychoanalist, France)
Fear of heaven as a path to wisdom

Summary of the speech

There are many fears and I don't know whether we are more afraid than we were. Fear is intrinsic to our nature and I believe that we need to work on our fear, using the right instruments, and I believe also that we cannot put this down to history any longer. We need to go back to observing ourselves and each other.

We live in a brief bargaining period, but what is not brief is the agreement. The difference is that at best a contract is a collection of decisive clauses in fine, almost illegible print, and stipulates only what will happen when one of the parties decides to back out of the contract. An agreement is the opposite. In it, the parts decide to put together all their resources to achieve their objective. It's a question of time. The agreement has a certain conception of time, but the contract does not take this into consideration: it is everything at once, and I prefer it. Fear overcomes an individual when he signs a contract, just when he should have hope and feel fulfilled. Instead he is afraid. When the certainties that determine fear crumble, we need to ask what the difference between certainty and security is. Security helps me to go ahead and certainty keeps me back. It is not simply a problem of semantics or vocabulary, rather it is a question of prospective.

We need to transform fear into behaviour and civility. It's a problem of correct behaviour and teaching ourselves to behave well.
