Discussion on cities

Summary of the speech

The perception that I have had of areas ruled by criminal organizations is that those who live there do not face their fears. For these people the fear of dying has been completely repressed, because the risk is compensated by the advantages and privileges that the clans promise. An example is the way that clans have compensated for the problems of garbage dumps. Why do people oppose the police trucks and not the mafia trucks? Because by not reacting you aren't killed and there is a chance that someone will help you get a mortgage or help your son. The system intervenes where fear is born, with the connivance of the population. The thing that has always torn at my heart is seeing that fear is something that slowly dies. I hope that fear returns in these lands, a feeling that is more alive and less cynical than the cold distance that exists today.

The first landing of illegal immigrants took place at Ischitella. The camorra clans sent a hydrofoil boat to Tunisia to pick up the poor desperate people to work on the building sites of the Coppola Village, a new elegant residential area far away from Naples. This is the reason that Castel Volturno has a large community of Nigerians and has become a business centre for drug peddling. With the Castel Volturno murder, the camorra was sending a message to African criminal organizations: this is not a place where we authorise you to live.
