Virtual escapism
Summary of the speech It's certainly important to fight the "fear of fear". A historical digression on modern and contemporary thought may help us to try to interpret today's fears. Where do these fears in our heads come from? There are two imaginary elements that wear down human beings. They can be summed up in one optimistic paradigm, which says there is a solution, and another tragic paradigm, according to which there is no solution. In a word, we need to live with it. The tragic paradigm has three characteristics. The first is that it is based on a health-centred religion meaning, that is: being cured. The second characteristic is that salvation is possible, by mobilising individual and collective energies. The third characteristic is that the debate is based on the Hegelian concept: overcome sin, evil, to arrive at the perfect society where evil does not exist. A process of metamorphosis is taking place. Institutions no longer attract people and are becoming more fragile, something that in the past belonged to ideologies such as Marxism. The means of communication are playing the role that used to belong to the bacchanalia in Greek times or to fall back on the Aristotelian idea of catharsis, dramatising and purifying. Today we need to not be afraid of fear. We need to live it, face what is going on, accept that a tragic outcome is the only option, tragic in the ancient sense, "doing with", not sanitising everything. To finish, a question: what would man be without his shadow, his fear?
