Summary of the speech The truest response came from the understanding of a subject which has been dear to my heart for some time and about which I would like to say something, so that it does not disappear: the reform of the welfare state which ensures human beings the peace of mind as workers. And today a liberalism without rules is sending out shock waves of completely unstoppable fears, shaking the human economic and social order. The solution, halfway between socialism and liberalism, or another solution as Giddens suggests, is a political one that excludes traditional political alliances. "So I hope that we can once again pick up the "hope that made the European Eden of social certainties great", as suggested by Becker's utopian realism". I am glad to have written a page together, us men of culture. I believe that the way to reform the welfare state, which to me is a mixture of the social and political dimension, is a road that we must tread and which, paradoxically, is being hindered by Europe. Europe lacks the pragmatic sensitivity that I see for example in America. The New Continent is not afraid to intervene by internationalising, something that does not happen in our country, which finds refuge in hoping that the problem, will be solved if given into the hands of private entities. The choice of topic was premonitory intuition. We started discussing the topic two years ago, then politics turned this into a meeting ground and battle ground, confirming that the idea hat hit the bull's eye. Going over the ideas that we have heard over the last three days, I'd like to remember the conclusions of our speakers, especially with regard to subjects such as globalisation and welfare. Globalisation must be positive and can help to solve great financial crises. We need to entrust a super-national organization with the role of regulator, and we could get rid of the fear of the demon of globalisation. With regard to Bauman's idea about personal inadequacy which generates fear and shows up as fear of losing, we have to face the novelties that come forward. With regard to the crisis of values, raison d'etre of the salvation project, I am thinking of Saviano who spoke of the importance of civil values taking inspiration from the "securitising non-values such as crime". We therefore need to rediscover fundamental values of society and a sense of belonging. Bell reminded us of the spiritual alternatives that some cultures are rediscovering as a way of facing fear and, citing Boncinelli, "the secularising function of science". I hope that other great meetings on themes close to our lives will follow every two years. Because Fondazione Roma dedicates a lot of time to the large problems of our society: research, education, culture, and voluntary work. To do this we need a guiding light, and an ability to make out what is the right road to follow. Towards this end the choice to join hands with Censis has been very important, and allowed us to find our way in a direction that gave us useful results and has been crowned by this event.
