Born in Atlantic City in 1926, James Hillman has studied at the Sorbonne, at the Trinity College in Dublin and then at the University of Zurich where he received his PhD in psychology in 1959. Student of Jung, from 1963 to 1969 he has been the Director of Studies of C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich. In 1970 he took over the direction of the Swiss publishing house Spring Publications which becomes the reference point programme reworking of analytical philosophy. In 1978 he founded the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture. He is currently lecturer and professor at Yale University, Syracuse, Chicago and Dallas. Among his publications A Terrible Love of War (2004) and City and Soul (2006). The Soul's Code: On Character and Calling (1997), where he states that the soul doesn't belong to man but man belongs to the soul of the world, is considered one of his masterpieces.
