WORLD SOCIAL SUMMIT 2008
'Wss: Natoli, we need a big moral revolution to face fear'

"Fear is a too general word to express a single concept: the reason is that people have a different perception of fear according to place where they use to live", said Salvatore Natoli at the beginning of his speech at World Social Summit. "The concept of fear has to be studied in depth to be properly reconsidered. Moreover", he added, "fears should be divided into three categories: social, individual and political one".

A research about fear, defined both as paralyzing and organizing, is the basis for Natoli's analysis. As a matter of fact, he highlighted the necessity of "working to show the importance of the organizing fear". Natoli also focused on main social changes regarding future challenges.

According to Natoli modern society is getting more and more individual, a process that has to be stopped. The solution might be a big moral revolution, able to focus on the fundamental role "other" in order to fight against fears. In the end, Natoli invited the public to rediscover the importance of scepticism as a way to face reality. Who is not sceptic suffers of that kind of imagination which can host fear.
