WORLD SOCIAL SUMMIT 2008 'WSS: Sacconi, the role of international institutions must be reviewed'
"The summit is held at a time in which we must meditate on the impact of globalization' said the Ministry of Welfare, Maurizio Sacconi during the World Social Summit held in Rome until September 26th. "Who confided in the magnificent fate" of globalization was subject to a "rough awakening". Because globalization created an "extraordinary opportunity but generates extraordinary contradictions". For this reason, in view of the G8 that Italy will preside, we must think over the role of international institutions: IMF, World Bank and World trade Organisation "In reviewing the rules, we must pay attention to those that promote social and economic development". "Institutions such as International Monetary Fund and World Bank, originated from Bretton Woods are by now obsolete, as the World Trading Organisation". With regards to IMF, according to Sacconi, a "monetary and financial" evaluation must be done in addition to the assessment on the country's systems, as well as an evaluation on the "social cohesion degree". A "link must be created between WTO and the World Labour Organization which conceives the rules that regulate employment in general and established recognized universal standards".
