WORLD SOCIAL SUMMIT 2008 'WSS: Emanuele, merit criterion against privileges for greater social justice'
"We must ask ourselves whether the State "must attempt to recover that role of "protector" towards its citizens, or on the contrary, must favour as much as possible, under its control, the "liberation" of vital energies that animate every social structure": said, Emanuele F. M. Emanuele, President of Fondazione Roma, opening the World Social Summit held in Rome until September 26th. In this regard, according to Emanuele, "the merit criterion should represent the main instrument to increase social justice against any type of privileges". The "convinced and unanimous acceptance of competition and merit criteria, said Emanuele, is bond to the "strengthening of values in the individual, based first on re-gaining trust in their potentials and responsibilities". Even politics must emancipate to favour "the emerging of the most brilliant minds and individuals, for whom the merit criterion constitutes the main instrument to increase social justice and that are able to protect us and eliminate today's fears".
