WORLD SOCIAL SUMMIT 2008
'WSS: Castel, the classical welfare state does not solve insecurity'

"The welfare state, as we know it since the post-war period, has been subject to a crisis for decades": said the French sociologist Robert Castel during the World Social Summit held in Rome until September 26th. "When we went from industrial capitalism to a more aggressive one - said Castel - the balance between national states broke".

"Today we fear to lose protections, to live day by day". To face this "we need an international institution model with political power". For example Europe "is running the risk to be limited to some principles: states are the bodies who conceive social policies, which are often very different from each other. International bodies are needed, which are able to control the single countries and an active welfare state for an unstable society" concludes Castel.
